New Fuji Has One of the Best Steaks in Town (and skip dessert)

New Fuji is an izakaya type Japanese restaurant with a retro vibe, located near one of the best restaurants in Vancouver – Anna Lena. New Fuji is part of the same group that has brought other good Japanese restaurants to Vancouver like Raisu. We had a nice seat at the bar and I really liked seeing the grill though speaking to the grill chef, he informed me it wasnt charcoal. Even so, they still got a really good char taste on items that we ordered that were grilled. We started with the blue fin tataki which was good and the sauce was flavorful and just the right amount of acidity:

The corn karage was also good and sweet. Maybe the corn is in season, but a lot of other places, corn will be bland and disappointing. Not the case here.

The chicken karage was amazingly moist and flavorful. I just wish they provided some sort of dip.

The only average savory dish was the Caesar salad with Japanese touches (basically bonito flakes). I have a recipe for Caesar dressing which I use as my benchmark for the dish and I love comparing different places against this recipe. Its not often matched or defeated! Try it for yourself.

For our main dish, I ordered the steak. It was from Alberta. The beef was perfectly cooked. Great crust and medium rare on the inside. The marbling was perfect. Not too fatty and not too lean. The crisp garlic chips on top complimented the charred flavor perfectly. It was as close to perfect as possible. One of the best steaks from a non steak place I’ve had, and much better than many of the hundred or thousand dollar steak places I’ve been to all over the world. Highly highly recommended.

We also ordered the uni tomato cream udon which was good, but the star was the steak:

The desserts were disappointing:

The mont blanc parfait was very average and so was the strawberry lava cake. I had a few bites and stopped eating because they weren’t worth the calories.

Overall, service was friendly and quick but lacked a little attentiveness in terms of refilling water. The food was really good and I want to go back and try other items like their rice bowls:

I would highly recommend this place, but skip dessert.
