Buca di Roma Vancouver – Still Around, Still Good

I haven’t been to Buca di Roma in Vancouver for at least 10 years and probably longer. I remember it being just called Buca back then, and that it was good. To my pleasant surprise, when I was recently searching for Italian restaurant in Vancouver, it was still around. The restaurant has an intimate neighborhood vibe. We started with “supplì al telefono – Risotto Croquette, Mozzarella, Sausage, Pomodoro”. They were delicious:

Next, the “bruschette miste” which is a charred sourdough with seasonal topping. On the day I went, they had an anchovy butter and fava bean version. Although the anchovy butter one sounded better, it turns out, the fava bean one was more enjoyable. The anchovy butter could of used more anchovy. Both sat on nicely textured and charred flavored sourdough.

Next were the pastas. All were delicious but they could of been more al dente.

Slow Roast Lamb, Fava, Pecorino Romano
bucatini all’amatriciana
penne all’arrabbiata e burrata di puglia

I wish they offered some traditional more well known Roman dishes like carbonara and cacio e pepe. Next, we had the roast chicken, daily special halibut, and Swiss chard.

The fish was good, and the chicken very good. For dessert, a tiramisu. It was well done.

Overall, service was good and the food was good. I would recommend and go back maybe once or twice a year.
