On a recent road trip from Milan to San Marino which passed through Emilia-Romagna, I could not help wanting to get a meal in around lunch time. The food in this particular region of Italy, in more specifically the city of Parma, is amazing. In fact, as you enter Parma, there is a sign which proudly proclaims it a “UNESCO City of Gastronomy”. My wife quickly searched for a highly rated restaurant nearby, and we quickly detoured. This is what I love about Italy. Random food stop in the middle of small towns, and discovering the amazing local cuisine. Anyway, she picked a place called Zafferano. Upon entry, I saw the handmade pasta proudly on display, and excitement grew inside me. It had been a couple of years since I had been to this area of Italy.

We started with culatello and torta fritta, and I was in heaven! I also ordered some 25 year aged parm and it was packed with umami.

For pasta, we had tagliolini with more culatello and anolini in broth. The pastas were cooked to perfection, and the taste was mind-blowing.

For dessert, panna cotta Maria Luigia.

Overall, service was very good and the food was near perfect. As close to 10/10 as you can get for lunch. I would definitely return and highly recommend you stop by if in the area.
