The Vancouver Club is a members only club located in downtown Vancouver. On May 10, 2019, I attended the Guimaraens Port dinner there. Fonseca Guimaraens is one of the largest Port wine houses in Portugal.
What was interesting about the dinner was the pairing of port throughout the meal. Before this, I thought of Port as something sweet to drink for dessert only.
The setting was communal and beautiful (I would estimate about 20 guests):
Here was the menu for the evening:
The first course was a very flavorful and delicate chicken consume.
Then venison tartare which was very fresh with no gamy taste:
Followed by a foie gras mille-feuille. I liked this because the foie gras was more of a mousse and so was not heavy:
The first meat dish was a smoked pheasant. The skin was nice and crispy and the dish was delicious:
By the time the last dish of braised short rib was served, I was very full. However, this was my least favorite dish as the beef was dry.
For dessert, there was some blue cheese, fruit and chocolate. Overall it was a fantastic meal. The pairings were great because it was something I had not experienced before, having Port as part of the main meal.
