BERMUDA

Bermuda

Prior to my trip to Bermuda, I did a lot of research on where to eat and the local cuisine. There are a couple of recurring themes:

  • 1. It IS VERY expensive
  • 2. You HAVE to try the fish sandwich, preferably at Art Mel’s
  • 3. While there are some great places to eat, you will not find anything innovative. Many places either have a hodge podge menu (for example, sushi, Italian and then local food) or classic (and I’m taking very classic) old school dishes (a lot of French)

Here are some of the places I ate:

Marcus

I have always wanted to try Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster in NYC. There are just so many choices in that city that I never got around to it. Fortunately, he has a restaurant in Bermuda, and in the hotel we were staying, the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.

The restaurant which bears his name is widely promoted as Bermuda’s first “celebrity chef restaurant”. The interior is nice and modern with great views of the water.

Devil’s Isle

Do some research on places to eat in Bermuda, and this place will pop up on every list. Looking at the menu made me very curious. The menu is completely random. They have everything from local fish sandwiches to Mexican bowls to pasta, and then ramen!

I really wanted to try the ramen, but did not want to be disappointed so in the end, I opted not to.

Anyway, the place is also known for great coffee so I started off with a nitro Negroni which is made with their own nitro coffee. It was outstanding.

Waterlot Inn

Waterlot Inn is over 350 years old and known for their steaks. This is another old school institution in Bermuda. The dining room has a very nice old world charm. We did not order starters as we were not that hungry. I had the rib eye and a Maine lobster tail. The steak was from Nebraska, well seasoned, cooked well, tasty and tender.

We also ordered a side of creamed spinach. It was probably the best creamed spinach I ever had.

Tom Moore’s Tavern

Bermuda was a difficult place to do research on from a culinary perspective. It was clear early on that the island was kind of stuck in a culinary time capsule. Now don’t get me wrong, I love classic food, (see for example, this review), and I believe that the best way to learn about a place is through its cuisine, but I also like modern takes on cuisine. Anyway, you cannot get more old school than Bermuda’s oldest restaurant, Tom Moore’s Tavern.

Of all the local food in Bermuda that I wanted to try, the fish sandwich was at the top of my list.
