Like Biting Into a Pillow – Pipeline Malasadas

Malasadas are a Portuguese donut which have become popular in Hawaii. I recently came across a store in Las Vegas called Pipeline malasadas, which originated in Hawaii, and serves delicious malasadas.

Each order seems to be made fresh because they come out warm. I tried most of the flavors and my favorite is the li hing mui which is a kind of salt that is usually put on dried plums. This flavor is popular in Hawaii and Asia, but if not everyone is a fan. Its kind of an acquired taste. It reminds me of my childhood. Its sweet, sour and salty all in one. To me, its the perfect bite. If this is not to your liking, they have more traditional flavors like sugar, cinnamon, ube, coffee and a few others. You can also get them filled with cream. I have tried the lilikoi one (passion fruit), and to my surprise, it wasn’t overly sweet. Each donut is so soft, warm, and just the perfect texture and taste. The crunch from the flavored sugar adds the perfect texture to each bite. Amazing place.

I don’t think I’ve had a bad flavor here. They serve great Kona coffee too, which is the perfect pairing for the donuts.

I have been back multiple times in less than a month and highly recommend this place.

  1. the key is coming out warm
otherwise just a fried dough thing
    corollaries to coming out warm:
    1) you will likely have to wait, even a little bit, for your order. you WANT to wait, so you know it is freshly cooked up. this is not the kind of doughnut that sits under glass for an instant cash-out
    2) you need to eat it warm. if you don’t eat it warm, it just becomes a fried dough thing

like fft said, li hing mui is uncommon but addictive. the tangy notes make me salivate
