Yes, they still have carts and “badish” service and its great – Ping Pang Pong

I recently tried the dim sum at Ping Pang Pong located inside the Gold Coast Casino. Its great for numerous reasons:

  • the dim sum was good; pretty much everything we ordered was good
  • they still have traditional dim sum carts which is very rare to see now
  • the are open until 3AM (I don’t know if they have dim sum all the time or only during certain hours/days)
  • they had “badish” service, more on that below

I won’t describe or picture everything we had because I can’t really think of anything that wasn’t good.

Lets talk about the service. I could not find the words to describe it so I got some help from chatgpt:

Chatgpt: The service is brisk, transactional, and utterly free of performative warmth. You don’t come here to be coddled; you come to eat. The waiter might bark your order back at you, slap the teapot down like it owes him money, and disappear before you finish your sentence — but the food will arrive in minutes, hot, fast, and perfect. It’s a kind of “cultural rudeness” that’s really just a different social rhythm: in Cantonese dining, efficiency and honesty trump politeness theatre.

In other words, it’s bad-ish — not because anyone’s actually rude, but because the service ethos is built on momentum, not manners.

A good shorthand: “The service is Cantonese-style — curt, competent, and gloriously unconcerned with your feelings.” End Chatgpt.

I guess that sums it up right. If you are looking for the “hi, I’m Jenny and I will be your server today. How are you? How are things going?”, this is not the place. However, if you are looking for good, authentic dim sum, you won’t be disappointed.

Overall, service was as described, but that’s what gives it that authentic feeling and is what I have known visiting pretty much any dim sum place (with a few exceptions for really high end places in HK). The food is good. I would go back. The only negative thing is the smell of smoke from the casino was particularly strong inside the restaurant when we went. Other than that, no issues.
