Surprised at Weera Thai

For dinner the other day I decided to check out Weera Thai. I thought I was going to a neighborhood Thai place, but when I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised at how big and modern the interior was. I felt as if this place could be on the Strip (there are a few locations in Vegas; I went to the one on Rainbow)!

I started with the papaya salad. Though I have been to Thailand a few times, I am no expert in Thai cuisine, but I felt the salad was fresh, and tasty. The flavors were well balanced. Good way to start a meal.

Next, Tom Yum soup. I didn’t know how amazing Tom Yum soup could be until I went to a few places in Thailand that specialize in it. The flavors are very very complex. This version was just ok, but not as complex or savory as the ones I had in Thailand. Still satisfying.

One of the highlights of the night was this Moo Tod Nam Pla – Crispy fried pork belly, served with Thai roasted chili dip sauce. Each piece was perfectly fried. The crispness was outstanding, but still delicate. The pork was moist. The only thing about this dish is that the dip doesn’t really stick to the piece of pork so you have to spoon it on. If they can resolve that, it would be perfect.

I also ordered shrimp spring rolls which were good because they were just shrimp wrapped and deep fried like at some places. Yes, there was a whole prawn inside, but there was also some minced prawns. It reminded me of a cross between a har gow you would get at dim sum and a prawn spring roll.

For main, we had the crispy duck panang curry. I thought the dish was decent but I felt the curry could be a bit more savory. Also, while the duck was fired well, I think in the future, I would go with a different protein. I would want to also try their other curries.

Overall, this was an enjoyable dinner. Service was good and the food was good. The restaurant provides a nice atmosphere for dinner. I would go back to try other dishes.
