Big Flavor inside a Chinese supermarket

Inside a Chinese supermarket on Las Vegas’s Spring Mountain road, you will find a hidden gem – Big Dan Shanxi Taste. Don’t let looks discourage you. Have a seat, and be ready to be blown away – depending on what you order. The draw here, aside from the novelty of the location, are the hand-pulled noodles. We tried 2 kinds, and loved one (the other was so-so and I would not order it again). The star dish was the beef noodle:

The thick noodles were obviously hand made and soaked up the delicious broth perfectly. The texture was just right. The broth was heavenly. Fragrant and beefy. The beef was tender and flavorful though the portion was a bit small especially compared to another beef noodle in Vegas I love – Shang (here’s a tip – if you don’t want to wait at the original location, they have a more modern one at the Durango). The generous cilantro was the cherry on top and added the right fragrance to each bite. The dish I thought was just ok was a sort of sweet and sour beef noddle:

It was ok, but again the portion of beef was very skimpy. The flavor was just average. Nothing amazing. Noodles were still obviously handmade which made the dish a bit better. It was hard to communicate with the server so we weren’t able to get her recommendations. Anyway, service was ok, the beef noodle was mind blowing. I would return and recommend. However, if you want to more modern atmosphere, you won’t go wrong with Shang either.
