Merah Putih is a restaurant in Bali which serves Indonesian food in a modern way. The interior is modern and gorgeous and had me feeling like I was dining in a tropical and art deco kind of venue. There is an a la carte option, but we went with the tasting menu. At IDR 690k, or about C$60, I felt that it was extremely well priced and also, the menu items appealed more to me than the a la carte items.

The meal started with some amuse. First, Yellowfin tuna served sashimi style with watermelon and calmansi which is like a mini citrus that is popular in South East Asia. The fish was fresh but I could not taste the calamansi and the dish could of used more acidity.

Next, scallops and corn which were good but not amazing.

Then a chicken dumpling soup in a coconut broth which was delicious.

The first starter was a beef rendang bao. I thought that the rendang was very savory and this dish was delicious.

Next, a chargrilled prawn. My thoughts on this dish were that it could of used more of a grilled taste.

Finally, duck with peanut sauce. The duck was dry, but the sauce was delicious:

The main dish was a beef curry and rice. This was a winner for me.

Before dessert, a palate cleanser:

…and finally, the dessert:

Overall, service was good, and I was surprised how quickly the dishes came out. I was worried that the tasting menu would drag on as some can, but this was not the case. The food was good overall, with no terrible dishes, some really good, and some just OK. However, for the prices, ambiance, and service, I would recommend this place.
