New York City has an abundance of steakhouses to choose from. On a recent trip to NYC, I decided to check out Gallaghers. Upon arrival, I was immediately impressed by the display of aging meats visible from the street as you can see in the feature image to this post.
Upon being seated, I took a look around and the atmosphere was everything I want in a steakhouse in NYC. It had an old school charm with servers dressed up in white tuxedos, wood panelling, and a nice bar with well dressed people. Here was the menu:

After ordering they brought us some bread and one piece in particular was unique; it was my first time seeing a banna bread being served in any restaurant.

Our first starter was the Caesar salad. It was decent but the lettuce looked a bit tired and not fresh, bright, and crisp.

We also went with the feature of the day which was the calamari. It was delicious except I wished they served a tzatziki sauce instead of a tomato based one, but that was a minor issue.

For our main course, we had the porterhouse. It was cooked perfectly with a nice crust. However, it did not blow me away. One side was tasty, with the aging coming through. The other was a bit bland. It was not the best steak I’ve had.

For sides, we had mash potatoes and onion rings. They were pretty good. Lastly, for dessert, we had the pecan pie which was nothing special.

Overall, service was ok, but a bit slow at the end. The food itself was ok too, but there are just better steakhouses in NYC. Its too bad, the restaurant makes such a great first impression and the atmosphere is everything I want in a steakhouse, except for the actual steak. I would not return.
