On my first trip to Argentina a few years ago, I ate at the must eat restaurant in Buenos Aires – Don Julio. It was a disappointing experience. This time around, I wanted to give Argentinian beef another shot. This time, I chose La Cabrera. Upon arrival we were seated promptly. We were given some complimentary appetizers that were of varying degrees of goodness, but the temperatures were off and seemed like some had been sitting around too long in the kitchen.

We started with the fried cheese which was recommended to us, but it was just ok. My benchmark for fried cheese is served Greek style and this was far from that.
Next, Caesar salad that was not very memorable.

The main event:

The steak was served with a variety of condiments and sides. My thoughts on these are the same as the free appetizers. The steak itself was very tender but lacked seasoning, a solid crust and flavor. It was cooked well, but it just didn’t have any wow factor that a great aged steak, properly cooked has. I think in Argentina, the steaks are prepared with grill marks emphasized instead of a crust. If you like that, then you may like La Cabrera (or maybe Don Julio). However, its not for me.
Overall, service was good, but the food was just ok to mediocre. I would not return. We also had dessert (crepes with ice cream and dulce de leche).
