Havana Vieja – Avoid

Havana Vieja is a highly rated (by Google) and highly recommended Cuban restaurant in South Beach. I have no idea why. We sat on the patio for lunch and started with empanadas:

…followed by camarones al ajillo (basically shrimp in garlic and white wine).

…and Cuban flan for dessert.

The food was just average. The service was incredibly, incredibly, terribly SLOOOOOOOW. It was also inattentive. Some tables got fried plantains, some didn’t. We had to ask. Everything we asked for came very slow. Pulling teeth torture slow. We weren’t the only table which experienced this as the table next to us got tired of waiting and asked for their food to go.

The gratuity is included in the bill like many places in South Beach. Some places maintain service levels despite the auto-grat, some, like this place, its appears, don’t. I would avoid this place despite the positive reviews.
