Gibeau Orange Julep is an institution in Montreal. It reminds me of an old school drive in diner. Something I would expect to find in the USA, but not in Montreal! However, its been around since 1932, and its easily recognizable by the large orange dome.

Upon entering, you can see the open kitchen and menu which includes diner classics like hamburgers and hot dogs, and because this is Quebec – poutine.

We went for a toastie which is unique and something I have only seen in Montreal. Its basically a hotdog in a piece of, what looked like sliced bread, which is grilled on both sides, as opposed to a regular hot dog bun. We got it Montreal style or “all dressed” which came with mustard, chopped onion, relish and coleslaw.

The hot dog was delicious. It lacked the snap of a good NYC hot dog, but the combo of the bread, and toppings made it delicious nevertheless. The toppings added a good amount of acidity and freshness. We also got the orange julep which tasted like an Orange Julius. It was not too sweet and it says they use fresh oranges. I don’t know if there is any added sugar. The fries were the only disappointing thing because they were soggy. However, this problem was not unique to this place and I found that the fries we ordered in Montreal were always this texture so it must be a Montreal thing.
Overall, there was a bit of a wait for the food. Once you get your food, there are picnic tables outside to enjoy, but no indoor seating. This was fine on the day we went, but it could present a problem in colder months. The hot dog I would definitely get again and recommend. The drink, I would not get again because I don’t like sweet drinks, but would say you should try once. Skip the fries.

you are king
that place is SO good
I recall a version that had cheese, I am pretty sure it was that orange julep
The drink is only orange juice plus a mix, which might have whole powdered milk
