Salbutes – The Single BEST Dish I Had in Belize

The single best thing I ate in Belize is a dish called salbutes. Its basically a puffed deep fried tortilla topped with pulled chicken, tomato, lettuce and pickled veggies. According to Wikipedia, they originate from the Yucatan Peninsula and “are a staple in Belize”.

The place I had them was in San Pedro at El Fogon; a Belizean restaurant. Here is a look at the menu:

They brought us some sort of taco to start:

Then the salbutes:

The dish is super delicious. It was so good that I ordered another round at the end, after my main, which is very rare for me. The main dish was just ok. I had the beef skewer special and my wife had the fish:

Unfortunately, I had a hard time finding these anywhere else in the entire country the whole time we were there. Every lunch or dinner, I would hunt for these. I asked everyone I cam across where I could get them, and other than one other place that I will tell you about, this is the only time I had them; and they were the best of the two. I highly highly highly recommend you go to El Fogon just for these. You can skip everything else. The service is pretty good too.
