What the first thing you should eat in Poland?

To answer the question that is the title of this post, Pierogies of course! They are Poland’s national dish, and according to some online sources, they have been making them since the 13th century! On a recent long layover in Warsaw, on my way to Tel Aviv, I decided that Pierogies were what I wanted as a first meal in Poland. I did some research and found Gospoda in the historical area.

They had a high rating online. We arrived before they opened and went inside to take some pictures, but the lady inside said taking pics was not allowed. That was a bit strange as was the service, but I had found advice online saying that service in the country would be “cold”. Anyway, our server turned out to be helpful enough and we decided to start with assorted boiled pierogies (after speaking to people later on the trip, we would learn that fried ones would of probably been a better choice, healthy choices be damned!).

My opinion is that there was nothing great about these. I would not order them again in this format. They were kind of bland.

We also ordered kielbasa (Polish sausage) and bread bowl soup (and a side of fries).

The soup was pretty good, but the sausage was outstanding. Very delicious and lots of flavor.

Overall, service was ok and the sausages were good. Unfortunately, we did not have enough time in Poland to find amazing pierogies, but I will not give up, and next time we are in Poland, I will continue the hunt. As for this place, I would say go for the sausages, and maybe try the fried version of pierogi, but skip the boiled…
