The late Anthony Bourdain once talked about how to select where and what to eat when visiting a new place. Basically, it comes down to thinking about what that particular place does best. In the case of NYC, there are so many amazing food options, but according to Bourdain “he first thing I get when I’m back in New York is a pastrami sandwich”. There are many options when it comes to this but the most famous is probably Katz’s which is amazing. I have also tried the one at Sarge’s which is also good. On a recent trip to NYC, I decided to try S&P Lunch because it was conveniently located near where I was staying. Upon entering, I immediately took a liking to the place. It had an old school American diner vibe and we grabbed seats at the lunch counter. Here’s the menu:
We ordered the pastrami on rye, a cheese burger, fries and a pickle bowl. The sandwich was delicious and I immediately regretted not exercising the “make it BIGGER” option on the menu.
The cheeseburger was also good, with a nice crust and soft warm bun. It wasnt overly complicated with unnecessary ingredients. Just onions, yellow mustard, and the patty. It wasn’t the best I’d had, but it was good. The fries were cut very interesting, more like chips than sticks. They were crisp, well seasoned and delicious.
Service was quick, friendly and attentive. Our server and the guy behind the counter were great. After you eat, you go to the cashier to pay. There is no bill, and you just tell them what you had. Honor system, love it! I would still prefer Katz’s, but if you are in the area, and don’t have time to get to Katz’s, this is a great alternative. I would certainly go back and recommend.
