The Sequel is located in the Coal Harbor area of downtown Vancouver in a location where there is not a lot of choices for good places to eat. The restaurant is fairly new, and I decided to check it out yesterday for dinner. I made the RSVP on Opentable and upon arrival, was greeted and seated promptly. The interior is nice and modern. It was smaller than I had imagined.
I don’t think a lot of people in Vancouver choose sparkling water because servers usually don’t ask, and this was the case here as well. I think its a lost opportunity for restaurants to gain additional revenue. Anyway, the menu is fairly big with lots of choices. After a long wait of about 30 minutes, our first dishes finally came out. First the bone marrow with brioche. This was an ok dish but the portion was smaller than it looks, and could of been improved with some sea salt. I like nice big hunks of marrow and there was maybe enough in this portion to cover one piece of bread despite the bones looking so big.
Another appetizer we had was the salmon crudo. This was delicious with the salmon tasting very fresh and fatty; the Asian flavors in the sauce were well done.
The escargot was a bit disappointing. I would of preferred them served in the shell and the sauce could use some work.
The past dish came next which was the beef pappardelle. This was very tasty although the pasta should be more al dente and the dish could use a bit more seasoning.
For mains, my wife had the sea bass which was really good, and I had the beef wellington which was also good. The crust was nice and flaky. The beef was medium rare though more on the rare side, and very tender. Sauce was good.
For dessert, we had the tiramisu which I would rate as average.
Overall, service was friendly and good. The food was good though I would not say this would be a destination restaurant. I think its a good addition for people in the neighborhood though. I could see myself coming back if I was looking for something in the area, and would recommend to people living in the area.
