Two iconic restaurants in Santiago, Chile, for Iconic Fast Food (but only one worth going to)

The first thing I wanted to do when I arrived in Santiago was walk around the old town and see colonial architecture. The second was try some of the local food. There were two in particular – a completo and a lomito. The first is basically a hot dog with a bunch of toppings, usually tomato, avocado, and a LOT of mayo. The style dates back to the 1920s when a businessman travelled to the USA, and then brought the hot dog back to Chile. Locals did not originally like it so he added the toppings which made them accept the new variation. The lomito, is a sandwich, with pork, and similar toppings to the completo.

For the completo, I went to Domino. They have several locations around the country. The restaurant is counter standing only, and I loved the authentic feel of the place.

The hot dog was pretty good, but was very messy and felt unnecessarily unhealthy given the mountain of mayo on top. Nevertheless, I think its something you have to try in Chile.

For the sandwich, we went to another iconic place – Antigua Fuente. Just like Domino, I loved the character and atmosphere of the place.

Unlike Domino however, I did not like the sandwich. I found it bland, and again, unnecessarily too much topping. Even though its iconic, I would not recommend.

Overall, both places gave me a feeling of blending in with the locals which I loved. Service was ok at both, but the people spoke little to no English so maybe we did not order the best items. Anyway, I would highly suggest you try the completo (you can get them at a lot of places including gas stations where I had another that was pretty good too), but skip the sandwich (or not, you are already in the country to you might as well try it).
