Scaramouche – Meh

Scaramouche is a highly rated restaurant in Toronto on almost any platform.  Here is my experience.  The location is a bit unique.  Its located in an older residential condo building.  However, once you walk in, its a very nice, elegant venue with an amazing view of the city.

We started with four appetizers: Kushi oysters from B.C. (not so fresh); pea ravioli, was pretty good; La Quercia Speck (basically a house made prosciutto salad, also pretty good); and steak tartare (decent but nothing memorable).

For my main, I had the duck.  My wife had the cod (more on that later).

For dessert, we had the coconut cream pie.

I would not return.  Here are my thoughts on the meal:

  1. Service was good
  2. In general, the appetizers were good; nothing special, but they obviously know how to cook well.  The food lacks creativity and its not that interesting.
  3. The mains were underwhelming.  My duck was cooked well and tasted ok, but the portion was way too large and there was no wow factor.  On the other hand, my wife’s cod was WAY overcooked.  It was completely dry.  She is not one to complain or send something back, and I would of done it for her, but I only tasted it when she was 90% done so we said nothing.
  4. The coconut cream pie lacked flavor

I guess over the years, this place has built a loyal following from people who want a predictable, well cooked meal, although the cod was a disaster the day I went.  6.5/10
